Ok then... The dates have just been organised for Beach life guard / lifesaver course with Progress Surfing in Gower & Swansea.

 Sylabus

Section 1: Fitness Test & Releases

1. Timed swim (pool) 400 metres /Time 7:30 minutes
2. Timed run (beach) 200 metres /Time 40 seconds

Section 2: Lifeguard Skills, Knowledge & Rescue

In the Pool

1. Demonstrate 2 releases selected by the Assessor
2. Timed swim (pool) 400 metres /Time 7:30 minutes

In Open Water

• Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of all signals

Tube Rescue

1. Run 50 metres with a rescue tube
2. Swim 100 metres (fins optional) to an unconscious, non-breathing patient.
3. Demonstrate deep water EAV during which time the patient shall be deemed to have become conscious.
4. Bring the patient to shore and demonstrate appropriate aftercare
5. Rescue ‘as quickly as possible’

Surface dive to a depth of 2m

1. May be completed during entry into the water for tube rescue

Board Rescue

1. Rescue an unconscious, non-breathing patient 150 metres from the shore
2. Demonstrate deep water supported EAV
3. Return with the patient to the shore

Rescue without rescue aids

1. Swim 50m
2. Perform a simulated rescue on a conscious casualty (No rescue aids)
3. Return patient to shore.

Simulated Emergency

1. Acting as a Lifeguard, as team leader and as part of a team
2.  Initiate appropriate procedures at an incident
3.  Provide aftercare for 1 or 2 patients
4. From a previously unknown simulated emergency situation.
5. Complete an Incident Report form.

Suspected spinal Injury

1. As part of a team, rescue a prone patient with a suspected spinal injury
2. Remove to safety.
3. Demonstrate appropriate action and aftercare

Underpinning Knowledge

1. 5 questions from work sheets (Beach Environment) at least 4 correct
2. 10 questions from work sheets (Lifeguard Techniques) at least 8 correct
3. 5 questions from work sheets (Communication) at least 4 correct

Section 3: Life Support

1.  Scene safety and assessment
2. Turn a patient from prone to supine
3. Check the airway
4. Signs of breathing and of circulation
5. Action for vomiting and blockages
6. Recovery position and aftercare
7. Obtaining an airway (suspected spinal injury)
8. Using an adult manikin, demonstrate EAV (a mask may be used)
9. Using a suitable adult manikin, demonstrate Expired Air Ventilation using supplementary oxygen via an approved method
10. Using an adult manikin, demonstrate 1 and 2 person Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
11. Demonstrate EAV/ CPR on

Section 4: First Aid

1. Acting individually, initiate  appropriate procedures at an incident
2. Provide aftercare for 1 patient from a previously unknown situation.
3. 10 questions from work sheets (First Aid & Resus) at least 8 correct
